Learn as We Play

At Small World Children Preschool, we believe children learn best when meaningful learning is part of everyday play.

Our curriculum combines child-led exploration with teacher-guided activities designed around children’s ages, interests, and developing skills. Through play, conversation, hands-on experiences, and daily routines, children can explore early concepts while building social, creative, physical, and problem-solving skills. This play-based approach is consistent with California’s early-learning guidance, which recognizes play as an important context for purposeful teaching and learning.

What Children Explore

Our daily experiences may include:

Reading & Quality Literature

Stories, conversations, books, and language-rich activities encourage listening and early literacy.

Writing

Drawing, mark-making, name practice, and other age-appropriate writing experiences support early communication.

Math & Science

Children explore counting, sorting, patterns, measurement, observation, and simple problem-solving through everyday activities.

Art & Music

Finger painting, drawing, singing, dancing, and creative projects give children opportunities to express ideas.

Cooking

Hands-on cooking activities introduce practical skills while naturally connecting to math, language, and following directions.

Dramatic & Block Play

Pretend scenarios and building activities encourage imagination, cooperation, planning, and problem-solving.

Outdoor Play

Sandbox, water play, movement, and outdoor exploration provide active ways to learn about the world.

Group & Small-Group Learning

Children participate in conversations, shared activities, and focused experiences suited to their developmental level.

Field Trips

When offered, age-appropriate experiences outside the classroom can extend children’s opportunities to explore their community.

A Balanced Day

Children experience a mix of indoor and outdoor activities throughout the day, with time for active exploration as well as rest and quiet activities. Teachers can use children’s interests and everyday discoveries as opportunities to extend learning across multiple areas, such as turning water play into an exploration of measurement or using block play to introduce shapes and spatial concepts.

Our goal is simple: to make learning engaging, purposeful, and meaningful through play.
